Normally WordPress uses the default permalink structure of http://Site_URI/?p=N
It’s not real hard to change this in the admin panels but what happens when you’ve been running a site for some time and have built up some posts and traffic before you decide to change it? For instance, after a year of blogging about Beanie Babies you’ve decide that links to your posts would look better prettied up a little by getting rid of the question mark and equal sign. So you go with the following:
